Getting back into routine at the start of a school year takes some work. There are things we have to do and things we want to do. It is important to keep the priorities right for your own family!
Back-to-school checklists can be polarizing – some of us love the start of a new school year with all the fresh gear, clothes, and big dreams of our little ones. Some of us want to hold on to summer with everything we have! Regardless of what camp you fall in, this MecKidz Back to School Checklist is a must-do with your child.
✅ Get your child an age appropriate Bible. We love The Adventure Bible and The Action Bible. You can find these (and many others) at The Grounds.
✅ Find a family devotional. You don’t need to feel pressured to do a devotional every day or even every week. But having a devotional ready to go at home makes it easy to incorporate a spiritual discussion at the drop of a hat. Try it during dinner time or let an older sibling read it aloud in the car. There are tons of options in The Grounds.
✅ Have a conversation about friends. Discuss what it means to be a good friend to others and also how to find a good friend. Emphasize being kind, forgiving, and treating others the way you want to be treated – and looking for those same traits in others.
✅ Have a chat about where your child’s self worth comes from. Kids can easily feel like they are not enough – but the good news from the Bible is that God loves us and meets us where we are. Your child is beloved by God and helping them realize that can ward off feelings of anxiety and insecurity. (Read Developing Healthy Self-Esteem in Children for more tips.)
✅ Remind your kids that Jesus is THE way, THE truth, and THE life. Not everyone believes this, so prepare your kid for that. Let them know that if they hear something that contradicts this, they can always talk to you about it.
✅ Ask your kid what you can pray about for him/her with the start of school, and then pray together. Remind them that they can go to God in prayer with anything that is on their mind.
✅ Tell your kid 5 things that you love about how God made him/her.
✅ Tell your kid 5 things that God made him/her good at.
By checking off these things before your child starts school, you will not only have them prepared with basic school supplies but a God-filled heart and mind as well!
