In other words, KPop Demon Hunters is a global phenomenon.

The show is about a k-pop, short for korean pop, female band fighting against demons who serve a master known as Gwi-Ma. Themes presented throughout their encounters include everything from honesty and integrity to demon possession, hypnotization, and idolization. The question facing parents is… Do I allow my child to watch it?

What Should Parents Do About KPop Demon Hunters?

This question faces every parent, every day, through movies, TV shows, YouTube videos. There are countless moments where you have to decide,  “will I allow my  child to watch ______?”

If you make the wrong decision, will it damage them for life? You’re not alone in feeling the overwhelming sense of pressure and responsibility! Thankfully, the Bible provides wisdom on practical ways you can engage with media and your child.

First, do your homework. Research the show or movie before you allow your child to watch it. While it’s not a Christian-based resource, we find that https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ is a great place to start your research. Then, ask: Do I see any red flags? Specifically, does the show support principles or values that you know are in the Bible?

If it does not match up with the Bible’s teaching, ask “do I have the time to watch/engage this content with my child so I can ensure my influence is stronger than the media’s influence?" All media will influence your child, for good or bad. But your presence and wisdom will influence them more.

How to ensure parental influence will be stronger than the media.

  1. Watch the content with your kids and comment when you see something you disagree with. If something happens that you do not like, make sure they know about it! This teaches your child to engage media with a critical mind, rather than blindly accepting everything they see.
  2. Mute ads and talk. Build a habit of talking through commercial breaks (if you have them) with your kids about the content they just watched. Not only will this give you space to comment on things, but it will also lessen the influence advertising has on your child.
  3. Let the Credits Run. After a movie, talk about what you just watched. Here are a few questions to get you started.
    1. What did you like about the movie/TV show?
    2. What didn’t you like?
    3. Was there anything in the movie/TV show that confused you?
    4. Who was your favorite character?
      1. What was admirable about them?
      2. What was NOT admirable about them?
    5. What do you think Jesus would LIKE about this movie/TV show?
    6. What do you think Jesus would NOT LIKE about this movie/TV show?
    7. What was the overall lesson, message, or big idea of the movie/TV show?
    8. Do you agree with that lesson, message, or big idea?
    9. Do you think Jesus would agree with it?
  4. Pray. God exists, and because of that, the most powerful thing you can do to protect your child from being influenced by the media, is to pray for it.

We are praying that you remain the greatest influence in your child’s life.
