Panicky Prayers by Parents

March 31, 2025

As a parent, you want what is best for your kids. And that includes their safety at all times. When our kids are not physically with us, we feel out of control and sometimes pray an over arching prayer for our child's safety.

“Keep my child safe.” That is the single most prayed prayer by any parent ever. Right? From the moment you sat in a hospital waiting to hear a heartbeat to the day they get their license and drive alone for the first time. Safety, and your desire for your child to be safe, is often at the forefront of your prayer life. Maybe even is your prayer life. These prayers are good. However, when we pray, do we actually believe that God is going to protect our child? Therefore, we actually release it to Him?  Or, do we pray and then take the worry right back?

So often, we go into prayer wanting God to hear our worry but not carry our worry. We pray like we are rubbing a rabbit’s foot - praying for the Lord to answer our prayers the way we want. We are more focused on our prayer than the God we are praying to. The Bible says that perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:18). God is the giver of perfect love (1 John 4:8).

Peace as You Pray

So how do we lean hard towards this perfect love to achieve peace as we pray for our children?  The Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:5-6 and Philippians 4:6-7 that we can…

  • trust in the Lord
  • look to Him for understanding
  • acknowledge the all-powerfulness and all-knowingness of God
  • know He will guide us and trust Him to give us peace.

Pausing Panicky Prayers

A practical way to apply this is “Pausing Panicky Prayers.” Make a list about what you feel most panicky about.  It can be big or small issues.  Nothing is too trivial for God.  Describe to God what you would like the outcome to be.  Be honest and specific.
Hand it over to God, and admit that He might say “yes,” or He might say “no.”  Trust that he is in control.

Read Proverbs 3:5-6 and Philippians 4:6-7 and write down what these verses say about God.  God loves you and He is crazy about your kids. There is nothing more that he would like to talk about than your kids and your concerns. We pray that the “Peace that passes all understanding will guard your mind in Christ Jesus.”
