How do I know what God wants me to do?

November 4, 2024

God has a plan for each and every one of our lives. We need to lean in and listen to Him in order to know how best to follow His plan for us. Once we are able to decipher God's plan for our lives, we can then help our kids figure it out too!

The story of Jericho is one of the most famous stories in the entire Bible.

God had promised to give the land of Canaan to Abraham’s descendants. But Canaan was occupied by a powerful enemy. There was no way Israel could defeat the Canaanites alone. They had to rely on God – and He came through.

He commanded them to march around the formidable city of Jericho once a day for six days. On the seventh day they marched around it seven times. The walls of Jericho crumbled as they completed their seventh lap. God fought for them. His instructions seem crazy but He came through in a powerful way.

The big idea is that God’s instructions for us are good, so I can follow them right away.

How do I know what God wants me to do?

It's a GREAT question and one we get in MecKidz, with a simple answer! Look at the Bible, and obey what God says in it. Shortly before instructing the people of Israel to take the city of Jericho, God gave 10 rules to live by.

God's 10 Rules to Live By

#1: Put God first.

#2: Worship God only.

#3: Use God’s name with respect.

#4: Remember God’s day of rest.

#5: Respect your parents.

#6: Don’t hurt other people.

#7: Be faithful in marriage.

#8: Don’t steal.

#9: Don’t lie.

#10: Don’t wish for other people’s stuff.

What's the Next Step?

Today, watch this video lesson about the Walls of Jericho: Our Jenga Battle Ended like the Battle of Jericho. Then talk about God’s ten rules to live by.

For younger kids ask:

  • Which commands do you not understand?
  • Choose a command and ask them how they can obey that today. For example “What is one way you can “Respect your parents” today?”

For older kids ask:

  • What command is the hardest for you to obey?
  • When do you have the hardest time following what God says to do? Why?
  • If you want to go deeper, you can explore our Home Guide for Kids. This guide has four activities that you can do with your family this week! 4_2 GO! Home Guide

God’s instructions often seem crazy to us. But He is trustworthy. We can rely on Him to fight for us. Be strong. Be brave. You have a big God on your side.
