What's Stressing Us Out?

September 25, 2024

Parenting is stressful. You know that. We know that. MecKidz is here to help partner with you to help make a stressful time a fruitful time of growth and connectivity with your children.

Why are Parents Today More Stressed Than the Generation Before?

recent report from the Surgeon General revealed parents are more stressed out and anxious than a decade ago.

One of the big stressors for parents is that our kids are stressed out and have higher levels of anxiety and depression than years ago.  Anxiety and depression are at epidemic levels for children ages 5-18 according to the best-seller book “Anxious Generation.”

So, as parents, what should we do?

  1. Create a new habit: Ask questions and then listen! Intentionally plan times to talk with your child about their life. A weekly dinner, the car ride home from school events, the 15 minutes before bed. Plan it and be consistent. The first few times, your child won’t talk. Keep at it! Eventually you will strike gold. Here is a list of questions you could use to spark conversation about their feelings and emotions.
  2. Pray!  Prayer is such an amazing gift from God that can’t be overstated. Understanding that God hears our worries and is working for our good can bring about a peace in our kids (and ourselves) that can never be substituted or replicated. Read Philippians 4:6-7 MSG. Amazing things happen when we pray. Start focusing on prayer and watch God keep His promise.
  3. Become a student and learn from the experts. When it comes to bringing mental health and wholeness to our children’s lives, sometimes we are a little out of our league and could use help from professionals. To get you started, MecKidz recommends a book series by licensed counselors David Thomas and Sissy Goff (Raising Emotionally Strong Boys, Raising Worry Free Girls, and The Worry Free Parent.)
  4. Join us for this FREE seminar. Meck is hosting David Thomas, bestselling author, speaker and licensed counselor, to lead a seminar on raising emotionally strong kids and teens. This seminar will be offered online so you can join from your living room. Register here, and plan to visit Meck’s online campus on October 2 at 7 p.m.

Let’s partner together to help bring mental health and wholeness into our lives and the lives of our kids.
