Why We Do MecKidz Family Night

June 4, 2026

In a world where families are constantly pulled in so many different directions, it’s important to spend meaningful time with each other, which can be hard to do. In this week’s blog post you will see how MecKidz Family Night is created with this in mind, as a space to be intentional with your family. A time to slow down, forge new relationships in your church community and ultimately, to just have fun.

In the middle of school schedules, sports practices, homework, screens, and the nonstop pace of family life, it can be hard to find intentional time together. That’s one of the reasons we love MecKidz Family Night so much.

A few times each year at Mecklenburg Community Church, we host a service called Family Night for kids and parents to attend together. This isn’t just another event on the calendar. It’s a chance for families to slow down, laugh together, connect as a family, and create meaningful moments that point toward Jesus.

The night begins with an optional pre-service dinner to take the “dinner prep” pressure off parents. We want Family Night to be as easy and fun for parents as possible. Our pre-service dinner is a chance for families to decompress from the day and meet other families over a meal. Our dinner emcee host leads simple “minute to win it” type games before heading into a night of fun.

Then comes the Family Night service. We work hard to develop a service that adults and kids will enjoy together that is not a passive experience but is intentionally interactive. It is designed specifically for a child’s understanding and centered around a biblical truth that helps guide meaningful family conversations.

There’s something really special about seeing your child laugh uncontrollably during a silly moment or participating in worship together as a family or hearing a lesson on faith in a way that actually connects with your everyday life.

Kids learn best when they are engaged, having fun, and experiencing truth alongside the people they love most. We want parents to have meaningful spiritual conversations that are prompted by having this shared experience. We want to make it easy to have conversations in the car ride home or around the dinner table later that week. That’s our goal when planning the Family Night service.

After the service the party continues with our After Party. The After Party is more than just a fun way to end the evening, it’s where relationships with each other are nurtured and new relationships with other families are built. While the Family Night service provides a shared experience around a biblical truth, the After Party creates space to connect with other families, make new friends, and strengthen our church community. Kids have the chance to play together, parents can enjoy conversations without rushing off to the next activity, and everyone gets to simply have fun. Whether you're racing down a water slide, cheering on a watermelon-eating contestant, sharing a cupcake, or chatting over a glass of lemonade, these moments help turn a large church into a close-knit community where families feel known, connected, and supported.

Research consistently shows that shared experiences and traditions help strengthen family bonds, and we believe faith-centered experiences are even more impactful. But there’s one last important reason that we invest our efforts into Family Night: It provides an easy first step for families who wouldn't normally walk through a church door. Family Night is a low-pressure atmosphere focused on connection and fun rather than super "churchy things." It’s an easy entry point for unchurched neighbors, coworkers, or friends who might feel hesitant about a Sunday morning service. If you know a family who's curious but hesitant, this is a perfect event to invite them to.

Family Night is a chance to get away from the typical bustle of everyday life and be intentionally present with your family, and the families around you. It’s a chance to laugh together, learn together, and build relationships that last beyond just a single evening. So, no matter what life looks like for you right now, we hope to see you and your family there!
