We live in a screen-filled world. There is unlimited access to all forms of content, and the world constantly competes for our attention through ads, commercials, apps, and smart technology designed to make life easier.
When used wisely, technology can make life more efficient. For example, it’s helpful when your phone reminds you of an upcoming doctor’s appointment for your child that you might have otherwise forgotten.
But there’s a downside. Maybe you receive a work email while spending time with your kids, and it feels almost impossible not to respond. If we as adults are feeling pulled in by the constant demands of the media, it’s safe to assume that our children are affected by this attention-grabbing world, too.
That’s why it’s important to be proactive about how your child engages with screens – especially now, while they’re still young. Because the habits around technology that your child develops now will shape how they interact with it as they grow.
1. It starts with you.
Your children are watching how you interact with technology. Be proactive, not reactive. Show them that you are aware of and in control of the media you consume. Family closeness and connection begin with your engagement. Use media as a tool to connect with your children, not as a substitute for parenting. For example, don’t leave your preschooler unattended while engaging with media like YouTube and other platforms that have algorithms and ads, some not appropriate for a preschooler.
2. Do your research.
Be aware of the most popular media that your preschooler is likely to encounter. Know the songs, creators, shows, and apps that are trending. Take time to research what these media sources represent, and be informed before allowing your child to consume them.
3. Go outside!
Research shows that free play, especially outdoors, helps promote motor skills, creativity, and abstract thinking. When kids play with others, they also build important developmental skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and risk assessment. So get outside and enjoy time with your preschooler! Being outdoors is also a great opportunity to talk with your child about God and the beauty of His creation.
Technology isn’t going away, but how we engage with it matters, especially for young children. With a thoughtful approach, you can help your preschooler develop a healthy relationship with screens – one that serves them rather than distracts from what matters most.
By creating a culture at home that fosters rich conversation and hands-on engagement, you give your child space to explore, question, and talk with you about the world around them. And when that happens, you remain the primary influence in your child’s life.
We are also here to partner with you in that journey. We have lots of resources designed for every stage of parenting. So check out the preschool section on our website and find parent resources just for you!
