With no permanent residence, homeless children often stop going to school - the one place that should provide structure in a life of instability.Without the influence of a classroom environment, these children lose more than a chance to learn. They also lose the crucial sense of belonging gained from interacting with friends and other students. But there is hope for these children - and help - through A Child's Place.
There are three key ways that Meck currently supports this partnership which are detailed below.
Annual Backpack Drive: Meck's 6th annual backpack drive for A Child's Place (and Children's Hope Alliance) for the 2016-2017 school year was a huge success!! We distributed over 700 backpacks filled with the needed supplies for the school year.
When dropping off the backpacks, we heard over and over again how much they look forward to receiving the "Meck backpacks" - so often they receive "kit backpacks" that are not strong enough to even make it through a school year. But they just love the care that so clearly goes into selecting the bags for these amazing kids. Since beginning our backpack drive program, as a church we've donated over 2,000 backpacks (2,183 to be exact) ensuring that children in Mecklenburg & Iredell County have the supplies that they needed to make a great start to the new school year. Way to go Meck!
Lunch Buddies: A more long-term investment that allows Meck members and attenders the unique opportunity to invest into the lives of ACP children to provide them with both a mentor and friend. Whether you can do this only one day a week, or have a opportunity to be there multiple days, it will be an investment of your time that will truly make a significant difference. If you are interested in becoming a lunch (or breakfast) buddy for A Child's Place, please visit the ACP website for their upcoming orientation dates.
Holiday Sponsorships: Meck families can help to support A Child's Place children and their families during the holiday season. This is a wonderful way for small groups, families, and individuals to support these children and their families and to show them Christ's love at Christmas.
