Who We Are

Mecklenburg Community Church (Meck) believes that being a part of the local church is not about religion, but a relationship with Jesus.  We are excited to be on the front lines of what God is doing in Charlotte, NC, and around the world.  For the past twenty years we have welcomed people to join us as they are; there isn't a mold you have to fit before you walk through our doors.  And it's a place where you can come with all of your questions, no matter what they are.

Meck is more than a weekend service.  We are a Bible study with friends, an online course in the Meck Institute, a misison trip to the Philippines to bring healing to girls rescued from human trafficking, and an hour during a weekend service investing in the life of a child. At Meck, we value community and believe that you'll find it here.

Meck is one church in multiple locations.  Just find the location that is closest to you, choose a service time, and we'll see you this weekend!

Mission, Vision, Values

Although a non-traditional church in terms of style, Mecklenburg Community Church is deeply committed to the eternal truths of the Christian faith.

Our mission is to help spiritual explorers become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

Our vision is to become a biblically functioning community of believers so that Christ's purposes can be accomplished in this world.

The values of a church shape what — and who — it is. Mecklenburg has 10 core values that are highlighted here, along with the biblical reasoning for each value.

  • We believe that the Bible is true and that its teaching is the catalyst for life-change in individual's lives and in the church. (Romans 12:7; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; James 1:23-25; Hebrews 4:12; Acts 2:42; 20:32)
  • We believe that lost people matter to God, and therefore they ought to matter to the church. (Luke 5:30-32; Luke 15; Matthew 18:14)
  • We believe that the church should be culturally relevant while remaining doctrinally pure. (1 Corinthians 9:19-23)
  • We believe that followers of Christ should manifest authenticity and strive for continuous spiritual growth. (Matthew 26:38ff; Ephesians 4:25-26 and 32; Philippians 1:6; Romans 8:29; Hebrews 12:1; 1 Corinthians 3:1-3)
  • We believe that the church should operate as a unified community of servants stewarding their spiritual gifts. (Romans 12; Ephesians 4; John 13; Philippians 2; 1 Corinthians 12 and 14)
  • We believe that loving relationships should permeate every aspect of church life. (1 Corinthians 13; Nehemiah 3; Luke 10:1; John 12:34-35)
  • We believe that life-change happens best through relationships. (Luke 6:12-13; Acts 2:44-47)
  • We believe that excellence honors God and inspires people. (Colossians 3:17; Malachi 1:6-14; Proverbs 27:17)
  • We believe that churches should be led by those with leadership gifts, and structured according to the nature and mission of the church. (Nehemiah 1 & 2; Romans 12:8; 1 Timothy 3; 1 Peter 5; Ephesians 4; Acts 6:2-5)
  • We believe that the pursuit of full devotion to Christ and His cause is normal for every Believer. (1 Kings 11:4; Philippians 2:1-11; 2 Corinthians 8:7)

History

When Mecklenburg Community Church was started, the front page headline of the Charlotte Observer read, "Brand New Way of Worship Comes to the Carolinas".

Meck began as a vision in the heart and mind of Senior Pastor James Emery White, and took a step into reality in a Hilton Hotel ballroom on October 4, 1992. Jim, his wife Susan, and their children moved to Charlotte with the mission of starting a church for people interested in spiritual issues, but turned off to church. In the midst of torrential downpours of rain from Tropical Storm Earl, 112 people came out for the first service.

God continued to show up and through innovative approaches to church, including the use of contemporary music, media presentations and practical biblical messages, people throughout the Charlotte area started checking out this new church and by the end of the first year over 400 people called Meck their church home.

Quickly outgrowing the hotel, Meck moved to David Cox Elementary School, then Vance High School, and finally on to an eighty-acre campus on Browne Road.

Now, what began with one family has grown to over 8,000 active attendees, 5 campuses, and ministry all over the world. With a continued resolve to reach out to spiritual explorers and share God's love across the globe, Meck is working towards a 2020 Vision of 20,000 active attendees and ministry in 20 countries by the year 2020.
