With no permanent residence, homeless children often stop going to school - the one place that should provide structure in a life of instability. Without the influence of a classroom environment, these children lose more than a chance to learn. They also lose the crucial sense of belonging gained from interacting with friends and other students. But there is hope for these children - and help - through A Child's Place.
A Child's Place's goals are to:
Mecklenburg Community Church has an opportunity to partner with this organization, and specifically with Druid Hills Academy (CMS) to help break the cycle of poverty for these children. And with one of the highest poverty rates in the county, the needs are great at this school. There are two key ways that Meck is going to begin this partnership. The first is our inaugural backpack which took place in August 2011. Through the giving of Meck we were able to provide over 400 backpacks to Druid Hills Academy to ensure that all of our A Child's Place children had the supplies that they needed to make a great start to the new school year.
The second, and more long-term investment, will be to send Meck members and attenders out to the school to serve as lunch (or breakfast) buddies to one of these children. This is a unique opportunity to get to invest into the lives of these children to provide them with both a mentor and friend. Whether you can do this only one day a week, or have a opportunity to be there multiple days, it will be an investment of your time that will truly make a significant difference. If you are interested in becoming a lunch (or breakfast) buddy for A Child's Place, please visit the ACP website for upcoming orientation dates. You can also contact Meck's Missions 2.0 Coordinator, Alli Main.
We are looking forward to this new partnership and a new opportunity to serve the least and the lost right here in our own backyard!
